Jante Law: the Curse on Scandinavian People and Churches

I am Pastor Julie Melberg. I brought this teaching together because I was struggling with certain problems in my own life. As I sought the Lord He step by step was setting me free. Then I found out about the Jante Law curse, which explained to me so well just what I was fighting with as a predominately Norwegian woman. As I saw layer after layer come off of myself and the many I ministered to in my counseling office, it seemed important to me that news of this stronghold must be published for all who are Scandinavians or have loved ones who suffer with this problem. I have found that it even seems to want to affect the churches that have Scandinavian roots as well. The good news is that we CAN be transformed from Glory to Glory and break these ungodly bonds in the power of the Holy Spirit. We CAN embrace our new inheritance as a New Creation in Christ!
The Jante Law is an unusual stronghold in the Scandinavian; Norwegians, Swedish, Finnish, and the Danish. I also feel the Dutch in part are also included in this profile.
The Jante law at first was just an unwritten moral and social code that many people just went by. You can equate this to ‘family rules, laws’ that just seem to govern a family. The Jante law was published in a novel in 1933 by a Danish/ Norwegian author Axel Sandemose. The novel was “"En flygtning krysser sitt spor" ("A refugee crosses his tracks"). The novel takes place in an imaginary Danish small town called Jante. This book is about the oppressive side of Scandinavia and the adherence to the Jante law.
The Scandinavia people took the Jante so serious that it was written and constructed much like the 10 Commandments. It is interesting to note that the 10 Commandments (and other laws of Leviticus) are often referred to as Moseloven, or the Mosaic Law in Norwegian. You will still find those of Scandinavian descent living by these ‘laws’ or social codes either consciously or unconsciously.
Today this spiritual stronghold on the Scandinavians from the Jante Law still has a grip many. Minnesota is full of people of this descent. We are a people who are shut down and walk in fear and shame and thus isolate. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule where some people seem unaffected by this spiritual darkness. Still countless marriages suffer from lack of involvement in relationships between spouses. Fathers neglect their families, and women tend to walk in an inferior stance to life to the point of sabotaging themselves. These problems are only to name a few that come from the curse of the Jante Law. The Word of God says those who have called on God through Jesus Christ have a new identity. The old has past away, and behold God makes all things new (2 Cor. 5:17). The Lord conforms us to what He defines us as. We are made in the very image of the Living God. Hebrews 3:4 says, “Let God be true and all men liars.” It is what He has declared over us that is reality to us. Our parents were only our temporary guardians; that is all. Our real Father is the Father God and He is defined as Love.
We must understand, that people in our generational heritage here on this earth have wallowed in lies for a very long time, and therefore we must boldly submit to God, resist the devil for him to flee from us to remove the destructive patterns in our lives (James 4:7). Ephesians 4:23-24 invites us to be, “renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
I have currently produced a DVD teaching on the subject of the Jante Law. A corresponding a manual is also being written right now that will define each struggle that is found for those who unknowingly suffer under it’s evil and dark influence. Shame, fear, depression to name a few will be looked at, along with the whys and what to do to break this vicious cycle.
